Outboard Marine Corp. is no more, Murray. The Johnson and Evinrude brands and assets were sold to Bombardier.

Many of us believe that OMC's quality control went sour in the last year or so of production.. .'99 and '00.

Bombardier has overhauled the design and manufacturing of Johnson and Evinrude engines and they are probably now better than they every were.

The failure of OMC was not because of poor products, it was poor management and the early troubles with the FICHT direct injection technology. Bombardier says, and I believe them, that their engines are now as reliable as anyone's.

You can buy a new Bombardier Johnson or Evinrude engine with confidence.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: omc motors

I repowered in 2001 with a 250HP Yamaha outboard. I have always been a diehard OMC fan, but found myself somewhat unsure of the company after their troubles. I have been highly satisfied with my Yamaha during the 150 hours I have put on her.

Johnsons and Evinrudes are now produced by Bombardier, makers of SeaDoo, Lear Jets, Canadair jets, and high-speed trains.

The 2002 products are better built than ever before due to their attention to detail. They are continuing to make parts for the older models too.

Re: omc motors

I personally took a tour of the new johnson/evinrude plant last month and loved what i saw. Bombardier took 95% of the original equipment that was used to build the motors and junked it. Then they went out and bought new. The plant manager told me that almost all the old equipment was either out of date or out of sync. I really think johnson/evinrude will be back on top very soon.
