I've got a Donzi with a 460 ford and a Omc king cobra outdrive. If the upper gear housing loses its gear oil would it lock up or would the engine still run but not shift into gear anymore?

Yeah you have to indicate the actual year model and model.

86-89 were Dog-clutch models and the 90 model 460 King Cobra was a Cone.

If it's an 86-89, and the "upper " seized. Nothing would turn. The engine would seem frozen.

Also, if the drive oil is refilled incorrectly, (filling it from the bottom like a Mercruiser) It could also seize....It would certainly destroy it.

Its an 89, but the motor didnt sieze up it just revved up like it just dropped out of gear or something. My mechanic said its the upper gear housing that it was dry in there from no oil and the splines all broke off the gear. I dont know just wanted a second oppinion. I wish it was a bravo but it costs a lot to convert.

Yeah. Yours is a Dog-clutch model.

Did anyone recently change and refill the drive oil?

The damage you describe will require a COMPLETE rebuild.....

It's not going to be cheap.

Sorry about that.
