i have a 1992 chris craft 272. it has twin 5.7 king cobra motors. i bought it missing both outdrives. the gimbels and trim pumps are there. but im not having much luck at finding complete units. the shift cable is in the uper unit, and they were damaged when the theives stol them. i have been told you can convert over to merc. but you have to start from the engine back with a lot of work. i guess what im saying is i need some good advice, as to which way or how to get my boat fixed and in the water.thanks.

Welcome aboard rbrn! I moved this over to the OMC section. You'll get a more focused response here. Watch out for Rick, he'll have you in a pair of B3s in a heartbeat ;)

As far as I know, OMC only put the King Cobras behind big blocks. Your should have regular 'ol Cobras behind those 5.7s. You have lots of options as far as replacements, DuoProps, B3s, or an SEI drive (cheapest). If I had the $$, I would put VP DuoProps on the back. I haven't heard a whole lot about the SEI drives except that they have good customer service. They also make a replacement gimble housing to convert the Cobras to thier drives.

It depends on the year. Before about 1990 or so, A "King Cobra" was a Dog-clutch drive behind the 460.

After that (1990 on) they used the term "King Cobra" rather loosely with several (cone-clutch) drives....

If it's a 92, AND it's a Cone clutch drive. Good luck finding them. (why do you think someone stole them? They're VERY RARE)

Your best bet with 5.7L engines would be to scrounge 2 ALPHA gimbal/transom mounts (and flywheel housings) and install either 2 Alpha Gen II's or equivalent SEI drives.

Are they cone clutch drives and were yours? If yes.....then, are the ones you found from a 5.7L engine? if also yes, they MAY fit. I would want to try them after checking with someone who can look closely at them and your gimbals.

OMC called a LOT of drives and engines "King" after 1989...........

I really do not think you can use that as a sure way to determine if they're compatible.

You would have to either get with a dealer that still has the manuals with serial numbers that are compatible with the ones you have, or try and see if they "fit"......... OMC called certain dog-clutch and cone clutch drives "King", but neither are "compatible " with each other.

If you cannot get the seller to guarantee that they'll take them back if they DON'T fit, you might end up with 2 drives you cannot use or get rid of.

Post a picture of your drive and transom shield. If you have the cone clutch "King Cobra", there are no kits or anything else to convert it to anything.
