Hello,
I currently have a 92 221 liberator that I am having problems with the outdrive...king cobra cone clutch. I found a volvo dps outdrive with transom assembly included for like 6000...would this covert over very easily and would it be worth my time or just try to have to king fixed?

Howdy,

Don't rule out a Mercruiser replacement engine/drive.....

I bought a complete low time, fresh water (97 Merc 454/Bravo III) engine/gimbal/drive with cables, controls, harness, gages, trim pump etc etc for $5000.

I pulled the OMC 460 King out and replaced it with the above.

You could also probably have your current drive rebuilt for less money. Certainly less than $6000.......but it might not be worth putting that much money in a King Cobra.

Regards,

Rick

Yes, you could convert it very easily. The only other thing you would need would be an engine driven raw water pump.

Thanks for the input guys. Would this be something I could convert myself or would I need some expert help? Will the transom assembly bolt right on or will I need to drill new holes and align it?

You could do it yourself. You would need a good lifting device. The 454 is a pretty heavy engine. Regardless of what you do it'll have to be aligned.

If you do a complete swap to a VP or Mercruiser gimbal the existing holes will match up (you need to drill 2 additional holes for the newer Mercruisers...I don't know about the newer VP gimbals)

If you do decide to use the VP gimbal and drive you may need to get other VP "stuff" for your current engine if you use it...flywheel, bell housing, exhaust Y-pipe, exhaust manifolds/elbows, trim pump possibly.....

The trim pump should work with the VP gimbal though I would think... I didn't try it but maybe I could have used the Cobra pump with the Bravo cyls... There was no way I was going to use ANYTHING OMC when I swapped mine out since I had everything from the other boat...(I did use my original gages though...since they were after market Teleflex..)
I even removed the complete OMC electrical harness and replaced it with the harness from the donor boat....

I am going to guess that Don has done this very same "conversion" (remove early OMC cone-clutch drive/gimbal) and replace with newer VP more than a few times.....
