MDKIRK reminded me of a very good question I had...

I have an '81 OMC230 v8, The one with the big rubber boot around the out drive.

I puchased this boat this past fall, and am getting it ready to finally take out this year.

I've had it out twice, once when I bought it, but the lake was so chopy, never got it up to speed.

When I got it home, I took it out to the river to give a test run to see what all needed to be fixed. I was having a bit of an overheating problem.

This boat as about 80 hours ORIGONAL on the boat. I'm pretty sure it has NEVER been changed.

How long does it take? and just how much gets torn apart to change?

Next time I'm working on it, I'm going to grab the #'s and get a book ordered for it.

Re: OMC Impeller

you can drop just the lower unit ,no need to dis connect the shift cable if you have a small table to set the lower unit on like a black & decker workmate.position the table just to the side of the upper hsg.just don't stress the shift cable .then the water pump is located in the bottom of the upper hsg.inspect the water pump shaft splines while you are there.this job will probably take you 1-2 hrs. good luck!

ndemge
If it is a 81 stringer and never had a new impeller probably good idea to replace but may not be your overheating problem. It can also be the thermostate, the engine water circulation pump or a plug up exhaust manifold or riser. I have a 80 OMC stringer and have change the impeller twice both times when I was doing other work but both time the impeller looked bran new.

Johnkc
Now I feel stupid. I though you had to remove the upper gear box to get to the water pump impeller and water pump shaft. So you can drop the lower unit without disconnecting the shift cables and set it far enough aside to get to bolts for water pump??

boatist ,that is the way i do it ,i take the time to set it to the side because i really don't like messing with the cable connections .you may have to feed a little cable down to be able to set it aside ,but i feel it is better than disconecting completely if all you are doing is an impeller
