I have a 1960 Evinrude Fisherman 5.5 HP motor that I'm in the midst of changing the gearcase oil. I was at Gander Outdoors and discovered I had a choice of 80w90 or 90w. Which one is best suited to my engine, if any?

BTW, when draining the old oil, it came out brown. Is this normal? The reason I ask is because upon taking off the propeller, I discovered fishing line wrapped around the shaft.

Either one is acceptable. 90 weight Hypoid oil was the original recommendation, if it matters to you. I wouldn't worry about the color, you don't know what it was when it went in there. However, fish line is a real seal killer. If you didn't find water in the oil, refill it with clean oil and recheck it after a few hours of running.

I just changed the oil in 50HP and used quicksilver 80-90W oil, which is what most of the shops around here use on the lower units.

The Quicksilver Premium Gear Oil is very good, and is usable in most gearcases, the exceptions being the OMC Electric, Hydro-electric, and a lot of Volvo I/O cases.
