Hello all
I'm going to be changing my outdrive oil on my 1989 omc cobra 2.3L
The manual calls for OMC hi vis oil but of course this is no longer manufactured. What can I use as a best substitute? Synthetic 75w90?
Just a bit about me: I am a complete first timer and would immensely appreciate the help :)

Thanks everyone!

It is still made. They changed the name from Hi-Vis to Premium Blend.
75W90 fine. You can use any marine gear lube in that approximate viscosity, synthetic or conventional.

As a first timer, you want to heed some threads at iboats discussing filling method to burp air out. Many newbies have destroyed their Cobra upper gears by improper filling.

Good start here (fill procedure at bottom of post):

Who makes the premium blend stuff/ where can I find some?

And yes I've read that post and it seems super simple. Am I missing something? I mean what else is there to it/to know?

Quick Silver High performance gear lube (yellow label) sae 90. You can get it at wally world cheaper than most places. If the same as mine should take 64 ounces and make sure to fill from center hole on outdrive.
Mine 86 cobra 4.3..

I've used the Merc High Performance gear lube for years and it's easy to find and works fine in the Cobra.

I would want to have a little bit more that 2 qts. I believe the drive capacity is 64 oz and some will leak out while you are filing it and closing the fill screw. You need a bit more to top it off.

That is what I use the one you found in your garage. Used it for years with no troubles.

Quicksilver is the aftermarket branch of Mercruiser so the gear oils are the same. Both bluish green.
But, do not mix the cheaper premium gear lube with the more expensive high performance gear lube.
