Anyone know where I can find a flusher kit for my OMC Stringer? I'm getting ready to winterize and need one desperately.

Re: OMC flusher...

The flush kit I have is a replacement plate at the tilt. This is what my Seloc Manual shows for the flush.

Now, my motor also has a Prestone flush kit attached to the hose from the intermediate housing to the thermostat housing.

For the life of me I can't see why I don't just attach the hose there instead of at the tilt plate thingy. It seems that the water is going to flow the same either way.

If no-one disagrees with me (and I am not sure I'm right or have even explained it well) then I would just get a flush kit adapter, cut the hose from the intermediate housing and flush it there. Be a whole lot easier then having to pull the plate off, put on the adapter, flush etc. then pull off the adapter and put the plate back on. Plus it'll be way easier on the gaskets.

In case you can't tell, I've been thinking about this a bit lately as I plan to run my boat some over the winter and want an easy way to winterize it.

Re: OMC flusher...

Not quite following you here. What I'm looking for, I think, is a garden hose attachment that hooks up to the water inlet on the anti-cavitation plate..right above the prop. The only things I can find out there are muffs, which of course won't work, and the flush port attachments, which I don't have a flush port.

Mercury has an attachment in their Quicksilver accessory line that looks like it "might" work. It looks like "half of a muff" with a clamp to hold it to the anti-cav plate...but it's made for their smaller outboards so I'm doubtful.

The only other suggestion I've gotten is to get a horse trough. Otherwise it looks like I'll have to do my winterizing backed into the lake.

Re: OMC flusher...

My Seloc manual shows a different way to flush the motor. Let's see if I can describe it.

Where the leg attached to the intermediate unit (the pivot point) there are small plates on either end of the pivot. These plates have channels for the water to move through. They are held on by 4 blots and have a metal plate between them and the leg. There is a cork o ring and a plastic oring plus a felt gasket.

My manual shows removing one of these plates and attaching a spare plate with a hose attachment. Hooking the hose up and running the motor. Now the water is going to be force back down the leg (as well as through the engine) in the wrong direction to the waterpump, but that does not seem to matter.

Now, if there is a plate by the prop, I've never seen it and my manual does not show it.

My unit is a 1975 (if that makes a difference).

Havin said all that, check out http://www.sterndrive.info/id25.html about halfway down the page for the "other" way of flushing I was thinking about.

OK, I see what you're saying. I found a small drawing in my owners manual that shows a hose hooked up to the tilt plate/cover thing on the starboard side. Now if I can just find one of those plates with the hose attachment I'd have it made. But I'm sure they've been out of production for many moons.

Re: OMC flusher...

Which leads right back to my original question. I see no difference in water flow from putting an adapter in the main water hose to the block, and pulling the tilt cover thing. From the cover, the water goes into the intermediate housing and into the hose. It just seems so much easier to buy a cheap flush kit and use it instead.

Can someone explain if I'm wrong? The site I referred to above seems to agree with me.

What a great link! I'm sure I'll be referring to them in the future.

Their "in-line" flush kit looks like the way to go if they'll sell one to me (can't find a price). I've emailed them so we'll see what happens. It also looks like you should be able to pick up that adapter at any good hardware/plumbing shop but then again it looks like a rather obscure fitting.

[Finds wall]
[bangs head against wall]

All they are selling is a Prestone Flush Kit adapter that you can find at any Auto parts store. The are made for flushing the block and readiator on a car/truck. Cut the main water feed line, stick the adapter in and clamp it off. Hook your hose up to it and turn on. Just be sure to put the cap on nice and sug when you are done so it won't leak out on the water.

Oh, and get one that isn't angeled like the one in the picture. They do make them straight.

Re: OMC flusher...

I would just use the muffs my self. I have a 1980 OMC 140 and do have the adapter and on the tilt pin cover on starbord side and it works great. I would try and find that but if you can not just use the muffs.

You could hook up the flush kit to the input hose but only question I have is will enough water flow back to the water pump to protect it from damage.

With the muff you flush water pump houseing of salt as well as the rest of the motor.
