this about an OMC 3.0 sterndrive from 1988 mounted in a bayliner capri
As everybody I have problems adjusting the ESA on my OMC drive. Eather it Stalls all the time or it is never activated.
I have have beeing reading some nice articles about the ESA in this forum but still. (I am dutch so it is hard for me to understand some technical terms)
So I wonder would it be an solution to make a seperate switch in (for example) your trothle handle with wich you than can activate the ESA whenever you want.
When you want to shift forward you need to pull the lockingswitch underneed the handle to unlock it.
If I would mount a microswitch in that, perhaps that gould be the trick.
I seems so simple that I feel that I am missing something, for example with this solution you can also activate the ESA when you are at full trottle Dangreous?.
Or when you are at minimum speed ant want to dock your boat activate the switch and you will go even slower handy?

Arnold

Re: OMC ESA Solution?

Arnold,

1) have you tested the the interrupt switch and the overstroke switch as outlined in one of the recent posts in this forum?

2) do you have an OEM Cobra service manual (much better than Clymers, I've never seen a Seloc one) and a Cobra Parts Catalog ? If not, probably a very worthwhile investment. It has pretty good instructions on how to adjust so that the switches do what they're supposed to do at the correct time.

I'm a novice myself, you'll probably get some better & more detailed help from others, but thought I'd throw this out as a start.

As Don said in a recent post, if you have other problems (e.g., bad shift cables), getting the underlying problem fixed first will really be necessary in order to get adjustments right.

Lakelivin,

First, no I did not tested the overstroke switch etc.. I was just looking for an easy solution
That,s a bit because i do not understand some of the technical terms wich yo are talking about.
So I think i will first must purchase a OEM Cobra service manuel.
problem is that your suppliers are only shipping parts and books in the USA and not to the Netherlands, I guees i just need to ask the local ship dealers what they can purchase.
By the way I still have the feeling that My " work around" good work.

Arnold

Do you have Johnson/ Evinrude dealers over there? My understanding is that they may be able to get OMC parts. Might be worth checking. You can get the OEM service manual off of eBay (about $50 new, hopefully at least one of the sellers will ship internationally). Suggest you also get the OMC Cobra Stern Drive Parts Catalogue (about $10), maybe you could find both at the same place to save on shipping.

Sorry I can't help with your original question, I just don't know enough to even pretend to give an informed answer, lol.

Good luck!
