I am looking to purchase a 5-8hp motor for a 12' porta-bote.

What is the difference between Johnson and Envinrude brands?

Is there a reason why the Johnson engines are so much lighter than the Envinrude, Honda and Nissan motors?

What outboards are considered the best value for a 5-8 hp application?

I realize this is subjective but any enlightment would help.

Re: OMC Engines: Envinrude vs. Johnson

Hello Bob;
It's been a while since you asked your question. This is probibly late, but better late...
The Johnson outboards are conventional 2-stroke carburetored. The others you mentioned, by your description are probibly 4-stroke outboard models. Hence the weight diferance, the 4-strokes are heavy.
My suggestion for your application would be to purchase a Johnson 6 Hp 2-stroke, 56lbs, Run forever If you take care of it.
(Hope you don't live in Calf)
Good Luck Rob
