If it is the motor your local auto electric shop probably can rebuild it for you.

Geeez.... I have a 302 V8 in it and it would be hell trying to get to that motor. Thanks all.

It really depends on the construction of you boat in the back end. I can easily remove the left rear seat panel in my 20 ft'r and get reasonable access to it.

When you get to removing it, be aware that the two mounting bolts that go thru the back of the motor are actually holding the motor together, so take care when removing the assembly.

You are likely to find the motor full of oil and water and that the commutator is all gummed up.

Some say that once the windings in the motor get oil soaked, they will never be able to develop their rated torque again. I have, however, successfully cleaned mine before.

There are certain precautions you can take when you reinstall it. Also if you do have to buy a new one, be wary of the cheap ones. They may not have sufficient torque.

It is common that oil and water migrate up from the tilt gear box. That is why some advocate packing the gear box with grease instead of the 30 wt oil.

Re: OMC Electric shift tilt not working

I would check the following (roughly in order):

  1. Make sure you have a fully charged battery
  2. Grease the trunions (zerks under the bumpers on either side of the drive)
  3. Short the solenoids to see if it moves (if it does, solenoids are probably shot)
  4. Check all the wiring connections to the solenoids & to the motor (remove, scuff up to bare metal & reassemble)
  5. Remove quadrant gear from the outdrive & try moving the drive up and down by hand (it should move easily)
  6. Open up the clutch housing, drain water, remove clutch pack & see if motor turns
  7. If the motor doesn't turn with the clutch pack out, the worm gear/ring gear might be bound up or corroded or the hammer-blow that joins the worm gear shaft to the motor might be bound up or broken
  8. Remove the motor and run it out of the engine - it should try to torque over hard when you flick the switch, if not, it might be dying
