hello guys this is my beginning post here on the forums.
I hve a 1971 fiberform 18' with what I recently found out to be a 210hp OMC electric shift sterndrive mated to a Chevy 350 4bolt(not the original powerplant), I believe it came stock with a 327 Chevy. Now I know what most of you think about the OMC's but I am committed to getting this thing rebuilt and back in the water. Not because it anything special but because I have it and it will be a nice ling term project to keep me busy out in the garage. I have both the upper gear housing and the lower housing torn apart and ready to be sent to get hot tanked. I do have a couple questions for you all though before I start the reassembly process.

1> I have the press on ball gears, is it possible to change the shafts out to a 1973 or later. The newer gears are fairly easy to get but the older ones seem to be nigh impossible to find in any decent shape.

2> My true course steering worm shaft has nothing on it. was this year not equiped with it or was it maybe removed by a previous owner. All that is present is a bare shaft with the seals and retaining clips on the ends and comes into contact with nothing that I can see.

3> does anyone have a factory service manual for this drive or parts manual. I would be willing to scan it PDF file and return both original and CD copy if you would be willing to let me do the work of scanning it in.

4> does anyone have a junk water pump shat they would be willing to part with. I want to make a couple tools from the bad shaft.

You removed the gears type torn apart? Withougt a OEM Manual to put it back together, that might be somewhat adventuresome to put back together!

If no one has one here is a good way to get one on Ebay

Re: OMC electrc shift

I have the Seloc manual that is fairly decent. Also I have a resource locally that is going to lend me all of the special shimming tools needed for the job. All of the gears look to be in good condition, buti am replacing all of the bearings as there are a couple spots on a few that i dont like the looks of. The reason I am looking for the factory manual is I have read several posts that say the OEM repair manual is much better than the Seloc one. i did check seaman on ebay but he doesn't currently have one, i even sent him an email asking just in case he just didn't have one up on auction.

If your using all the old gears you should have borrowed you buddies tools the check the location of all the old gears before teardown. That way they could be put back where they were so the wear pattern would not be changed. Who knows how much of the origional plus or minus tolerance allowance was used.

Ive got the executive 2800,1978. twin 302s with the omc electric shift outdrives. I found www.sterndriveinfo.com' was a good site to help with parts and manuals etc.
