STAYS IN GEAR UNDER 900 RPM'S. OVER 1200 RPMS BANGS IN AND OUT OF GEAR. REVERSE APPEARS TO WORK FINE. ANY SUGGESTIONS OR IDEAS WHAT IT COULD BE? I LIVE IN MASSACHUSETTS OUTSIDE OF BOSTON - ANYONE HAVE ANY REFERRALS FOR A GOOD OMC MECHANIC IN THIS AREA?

First off, make sure that the gear oil you are useing in the lower gearcase is apropriate for this electric shift.Should be OMC premium blend or aftermarket type c gearlube. This gearcase operates on spring tension around a knurled cylinder. If that knurling has worn it could cause the symptoms you describe.

when you say banging in and out of gear, do you mean it goes back in by itself. Sounds like a loose connection to me. Of course if the engine revs and doesn't come back until you idle, that is the sign of a spun hub on the prop...

BIG AL:

IT GOES BACK INTO GEAR ON IT'S OWN AS SOON AS YOU IDLE THE RPMs DOWN. REVERSE WORKS FINE. HESITATES WHEN FIRST ENGAGING INTO FORWARD FOR A COUPLE OF SECONDS BEFORE PROP STARTS TO MOVE. PROP IS SOLID SHAFT WITH SHEAR PIN, NO RUBBER HUB. ANY OTHER THOUGHTS.....

HONDON:

THANKS FOR THE INFO, HOW TOUGH OF A JOB IS IT TO REPLACE THE KNURLING CYLINDERS? ICAN BE THIS BE ATTEMPTED BY MYSELF - PRETTY MECHANICALLY INCLINED, BUT I HAVE NEVER HAD TO TINKER WITH OUTDRIVE BEFORE..... OR SHOULD IT BE LEFT FOR THE PROFESSIONALS?

I would have to say you have a spun prop hub. There is a rubber drive hub in there. I have the same drive you do, and if you search my member number (7502) under outboard motor questions, I had the same problem you describe. I hope you have the prop checked first. It is a fail safe device that allows you to get back to shore, but not on plane. My boat guy says he has never had to replace a knurled hub in 28 years. I do trust him so I went with just the spring on my fix.
