I haven't posted in a while, and I'm still new to bigger outboards so here it goes. I have a 1985 50 hp Evinrude that I purchased last year with OMC controls. The control box has a lever on the top, and a small black knob below the iginition key. I am assuming that the lever is the choke. Should this be in the up position when starting the motor. What would the black knob be for? Also the motor starts up and runs when connected to a hose and rabbit ears. It seems pretty shaky, and there is like a frequent almost like a backfire noise coming from the exhaust. Just wondering if this is ok for an older motor. Again I am pretty new with this stuff, only having owned before 9.9's that were pull start, and I didn't really have to work on them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Re: OMC control box

First thing you want to do is to look up your motor in the BRP parts site and identify the remote control that you have. Hopefully it is a standard one.

Once you have the diagram you can see what the components functions are. Most 85 models could be choked by pushing in on the ignition key.

Just under the ignition key is a friction knob that can be tightened to prevent throttle creep.

The lever on top is a warm up lever, should be raised to advance the throttle when starting. It will lock out the control arm, so lower it before going into gear.

Re: OMC control box

My motor will not idle real nice with the muffs on either. it needs the back pressure from the water. Try in a tank, or take to the lake.

I have a 1983 Johnson 115 with the OMC control box. The fast idle lever will raise but does increase the rpm's like it use to. Also, when I shift into reverse, the motor goes into gear but will not advance the throttle. does this sound like a control box issue or a throttle cable issue. Any suggestions for a solution would be great.
