OMC Cobra trim range versus tilt range

Hello,

I have a '88 SeaRay175 with an 3L(140 hp) / OMC Cobra.

My trim / tilt gauge is not working. The sender is defect. I don't want to repair or replace it.

To be able to cruise in shallow water I would like to trim the lower unit up to the max allowed angle.
As the OMCs did not have a trim limit sensor that stops lifting the lower unit when approaching the tilt range I'm afraid I might go too far.

Can anybody tell me from which angle (counting from full down position) the tilt range begins?
I guess full travel from full down to full up (trailer mode) is about 40 degrees.

If I knew this angle I could count seconds while trimming instead of using the trim gauge.

thanks

Stefan

Have you looked at what the max allowed angle is when the boat is on the trailer? I looked at mine and it would still ding the prop if I hit something.

Thanks for the link levinz11. This goes into the right direction.

Agallant, how can i find the max allowed angle to run the engine at least in idle? My gauge doesn't work.
I do not expect to lift the drive so high that it wouldn't touch ground before the hull does, but I want to gain some inches in shallow waters.

The original owners manual probably contains the exact info you need. But in the link I posted the famous Don S says you can tilt it up until the prop comes out of the water....in idle only of course. So tilt away SB. At idle, if the prop is still in the water you are good.
