I have an 87 OMC cobra 3.0L with gear problems. I have pretty much determined that the gearset is shot. I was pricing a new gearset at around $350. A friend of mine's landlord has an old boat with the same engine and drive rotting in the backyard. I thought that I could offer him a hundred bucks or so for the drive or maybe just the lower unit. Here's the question: Can I just pull the lower unit off and replace mine, or should I go for the whole outdrive? Not sure if this would be a relatively easy switch or not. Oh and any suggestions on what to offer the guy for the drive? I thought that mabye I would offer to "dispose" of the boat for him so it doesn't take up the room in his yard. :) Thanks for the help!

If your gonna get this drive for $100.00 or maybe just get rid of it for him. Take everything you can(EVERYTHING), as long as its ok w/ the landlord. But build it for a backup or parts. Your the one who said its rotting. I'm sure the drive needs some work too.
