OMC Cobra Outdrive Locking up

A friend of mine has a 1987 Invader Boat with an OMC Cobra outdrive. We were out on the water and the engine just shut down while we were
driving. It will run all day in neutral, but when you put it in gear about 30 seconds later it shuts the motor down. When it shuts the motor down it is instant it sounds like the motor locks up. When you put it back in neutral, try to fire it it sounds like it is binding but then it fires up. Im not a boat expert but it sounds like the outdrive went south. Any help with this would be great.

Yes that's what it sounds like, in neutral with the engine running everything is turning in the upper portion of the unit, the shifting happens in lower portion and more than likely where your problem is.
