i have a 89 2.3 l omc cobra<br />does anyone how hard it is to replace the forward and reverse gears in the lower unit. thanks for all you help

its really not a DIY job because of special tools and shiming<br /><br />some people do it but its a 10 on a 1-10 scale<br /><br /><br />tommays

Well - I'm no expert, but I do about all the maintenance on mine.<br /><br />I also had lower unit failure. I disassebled the unit myself to verify that it was indeed the lower gears, and it was quite clear reassembly wasn't going to be an amateur job. The needle bearings for the vertical shaft alone would have taken me a long time.<br /><br />I purchased my gearset on ebay for $200 and had the assembly done for $600.
