OMC Cobra/400/800 ??

I just purchased a 86 Galaxie 4 cy inboard with a OMC Outdrive. I know it is OMC because it is stamped that on top, but where would I find a model number for the outdrive or how do I tell the difference? I have been told it is possible that is is a 85 400, or a 86 Cobra.

Well the 400/800 and the Cobra are totally different. The Cobra is more like a Volvo SX in that it has the trim cylinders that raise the drive. The 400/800 have no trim cylinders, and have a big rubber boot in the stern of the boat where the drive comes out with 20 or so screws in it. Hopefully you have a Cobra, they are not too hard to get parts for at this time. Cobras started in 86.

More than likely you don't have the cobra. They don't have any stamp on top of the drive. What color is yours. I have a Galaxy and I believe the introduced the cobra in 87 even though 0mc made them earlier

I dont have the trim cylinders and I do have the big rubber boot. It appears the outdrive was once painted white. They said it has never been in salt water but its been in something nasty because the paint it all chipping off. Been going through it, and so far all the problems we have found it the water pump drive missing splines. Know any secrets to finding parts for them then other than time and patience.

Search online for parts, your cheapest way to go. Personally I like to feel what I'm buying. I believe Napa auto parts sells parts for these.

I have the older Stringer drive and I have not had trouble finding parts for it. Affording the parts is a different matter, but a local boat dealer has been able to get everything I've needed. Plus there is a whack of use parts on Ebay for it.
