I am considering buying an 88' Seaswirl with a 4.3GMC with an OMC Cobra outdrive, the boat is in mint condition and I would welcome any opinions on this type of engine and outdrive.

Personally........Find another rig. Some parts for the Cobra are getting hard to find. Do you have a dealer near you that works on them? Alot of dealers will not work on them (at least in my area).

Ist, I'd ask for a service history on the unit. Did the orginal purchaser have the OMC cable/gears recall done?? Have him show all the repair orders he's got. Second, Stand next to the outdrive on the driver's side. Push the lower unit to port and look up at the shift cable. It should be a red plastic coated cable and the integrity of that cable should be OK. Look closely !! 3rd, Go for a ride. check for 100% operation. Shifts EZily and accelerates correctly. No bumps, jerks , noises out of the ordinary. They really a pretty good system. They just have to work correctly. Changing a shift cable on a Cobra is EZier than on a MerCruiser !! But you do need a manual if you're gunna attempt to dso any sewrce yourself. AND, a local knowledable dealer is helpful.

The OMC 4.3 is a much superior drive unit than a Mercruiser (I just sold a 2001 Mercruiser). Parts are still readily available and affordable. Take advice from one who owns one and judge it on the overall boat condition.
