OMC carb issues?

Hey list!

Took my 5.0 OMC out the other day, and have some questions.

Boat starts fine cold. Idles nicely, etc. The boat is very slow to accelerate and get on plane, and generally runs like a dog until it gets up to speed. Once I'm at top speed (which is in spec at 4300 RPM WOT), it runs fine. When I let the throttle off to stop, the engine dies, and wont restart without a LOT of love. My instincts tell me its flooded. Letting it sit for awhile with the carb open gets me running again.

Sound like a carb rebuild is necessary? Or just some carb cleaner... I would assume it is running rich for some reason.

Thanks for the advice!

Sounds like it could be carb or fuel related. What type of carb is it?

Also, take off the arrestor and look inside the carb after a shut-down.
See if any gas is dribbling inside (sometimes you can't see it, even if it is, depending on which carb.
