Is an alignment tool necessary? I'm replacing the gimbal bearing and u-joint bearings along with the bellows. Ive seen posts suggesting the use of an alignment tool or even using the actual shaft as an alignment tool prior to reinstalling the lower unit.

If the coupler is out of alignment from pulling the shaft out wouldn't it be out of alignment after you remove the alignment tool? Is the alignment tool more than a tapered shaft?

I'm familiar with a automotive clutch alignment tool but fail to get how this works.

Any explanation would be helpful.

The gimbal bearing is not movable in relation to the engine, but the engine is in relation to the bearing.
The alignment bar is used to align the engine to the bearing, using the engine mounts.
Take a look in the Adult's Only thread for your maintenance manual. It will explain the reason for the alignment.

Jeff,

I'm not sure if it is necessary 100% for what you are doing, but why not while you have the outdrive off. Yes, it does work similar to a clutch pilot tool, and I bought one off of ebay for around 70 bucks last year, only use it twice a year. I say that you should do it for the reason that i learned; i was out of alignment, and burned up the engine coupler, and then found myself pulling the engine to replace the coupler. So, since the outdrive is off, might as well make sure that your alignment is good.
