Re: omc 8oo electric shift

Hey Stewart,
I've got a '69 OMC electric shift stern drive. You can't put those drives in gear above 800 rpm (factory spec is 650) or you risk breaking a spring (elec. shift works by supplying voltage to a spring that constricts when you put it in gear). So, your engine has to run well at low idle or you can't use your drive.
Bombardier bought OMC and doesn't make parts for the older drives anymore. I've been able to find parts, but they've been expensive and a lot of shops won't work on older drives.
If the boat you're looking at is older and has ball gears, you won't be able to tilt the outdrive at all when engine is running because ball gears will wear. Drive must be all the way down to start. I've heard older Mercs are better for parts and service, but haven't had any personal experience.

Thank you for your reply. This answers some of my concerns.I guess you just have to be careful with the shifting.
