Can any one tell me how to keep the grease on the water pump shaft? I've used omc grease and ultra black sealer,60 HRS later the splines are clean,I think it happens the first hour.So in 250 HRS the splines are wore out, then the upper shaft also has to be replaced. BIG $$$$$$ and I not sure i can replace the upper shaft, unless i get some help here? Does every body have this problem or is something wrong.

Re: OMC 800 water pump shaft

Years ago, I heard several explainations as to why this happens. One was that the housing that holds the upper to the lower gets somehow warped and misaligns the shafts. Another explained that too much carbon steel was used in the process and caused the eating up of the spline. I'd rather think of it as a poor design or maybe its being caused by UFO's. As for keeping grease on the shaft, there's a weep hole in the side of the housing above the pump that allows water into that area. Probably water is washing the grease off.

Butch<br />I know of no way to keep grease up there but I think any time need to replace one shaft should also replace the other shaft. It is a common problem on the stringer outdrives.

Once the shafts have spun, they should both be replaced, even though only the water pump shaft looks wasted. You will need several special tools to shim and replace that upper shaft.Sorry.

My shafts haven't spun, but the splines are pointed on the top. can't see that they will last 50 Hr's. It looks like I better take it to a service center. I'm going to persue putting the raw water pump on the front of the motor. I'll let you know what we do or find. Thanks for the info.

I hope this is not to late, I was just reading some old post and came across your water pump shaft problem, I read this in one of the web, but I was not able to get a feed back how this was done, I wrote to them several time, they just advise me to see the Seloc Manuel:(On the upper Gear Housing Stringer 800 out drive should drill 1/4 hole and place a bolt or split pin in the water Pump shaft, to reduce the vibration and failure of the drive shaft. The Web Site is http://www.sterndrive.info/id11.html. If you find out how this was done please let me know also, by the way the raw water pump is the best way to go with is OMC drive.
