On a 1985 OMC 800 tilt mechanism what lubricant is recommended? I was told by a boat mechanic to use ATF but it leaks out and water leaks in. R

you need to change the seal on the shaft. It will still leak but more slowly. Then fill it with the cheapest 10W30 you can buy, change it once or twice a season, and drain it completely in the fall so water doesn't freeze and break the hsg.

Couple of pros here suggested pack it with marine grease, topping it off with gear lube. At least if water intrudes, everything is covered and the grease won't leak out. That was their modification.

I had the same problem and took the pro's advice and packed it with marine grease. Just checked it after 2 months in the water and it dry. the grease must seal it if its a small leak. Worked great for me. I put the tilt fuild in before and it would leak out. There still was somne in there and I just left it and changed it every season. Go with the marine grease, it works great.
