ok.......had my '85 800 series upper gearcase rebuilt (new gears, bearings, etc.)...question is now I have a slight whine at higher rpms..is this normal? mechanic told me that all gears have proper clearance per manual, sounds to me like gearset clearance is a little tight??? should I insist that it be re-done or will it be ok??

Tough call FF. My 800 doesn't whine. I would not be happy with it. If you want I can give you the tel # of an old timer expert in Portland Oregon to call and ask. I would definitely want a second opinion on the causes of whining and the potential problems, if any.

Boomyal,

Is the old-timer expert you know familiar with 800 lower shifting problems? I can't find anyone around here that'll even touch an 800, and I haven't had any luck on the forum for help.

Ryans Marine on Marine Dr, right by the west end of the runway. He's been at it since the beginning and knows them inside out. He likes to make money but will answer questions as long as he doesn't feel that you are pumping him for major do it yourself work. He'll even let you watch the work if you ask him.

Steve @ 503 282 8807

If you had a new ball gear installed on the upper but kept the old one on the intermed. then that could cause a whine until the ball gears mesh.

Good point.
Everything I have ever read on the subject says change them in pairs only. Although whine is not mentioned, you will wear out the new gear much quicker.

this is a long shot, but once my little tin water deflector thing was touching the ball gear on the intermediate....it was a clicky sort of whine
