Hey guys. A little feed back if you please.

Just finished putting my outdrive together after replacing the water pump shaft and upper shaft. Pressure tested fine. However, the guy who put the upper back together for me tells me the lower is showing a leak after pressure testing.

When I drained the gear oil at the beginning of all this, the upper was milky white and the lower was a caramel color. I understand that caramel indicates a leak, but it seems to me, that since the gear oil wasn't white, that I might be able to get by with just changing the gear oil frequently. I think he said that the upper shaft seal(s) were leaking. Quoting $40 for parts, 3 hrs labor at $60/hr.

Already owe $250 just for reassembling the upper, not sure I want to spend another $250 unless absolutely necessary.

1) Can I get by with frequent gear oil changes for this season?

2) If not, what kind of a job is it to replace those seals?

Thanks
Fred

Fred, You can keep eye on it,if it sits for two or more weeks pull the bottom plug and see how much water seperated. some oil turns kinda milky when air stired into it, I like to drain oil in glass jar and let sit for a month. The water goes to the bottom. hope this helps.

Thanks Butch. I'll probably start doing that myself in the future. It's a good idea. I've decided to err on the side of caution, since I'll be boating in and around the intra-coastal and possibly the ocean, and have the lower seals done while it's off the boat.
Fred
