i wanted to start of by saying, i have really been enjoying the site and have found a lot of very good tech on here. most of the things i ran across with my boat i could get to bottom of with a few thread searches but this one has got me stumped.

my boat is a 78 century 351 omc stringer I'm not for certain but i think the hydro shift drive has already been upgraded. the shift converter box does have the micro switches so it is a 81 and newer box. the micro switch is bad so i have new ones ordered. my question is, my dad (the boats previous owner) had installed pertronics ignition. from the reading i have done it seems you need to add a cdi shift ignition switch? i have read how people have made it work different ways. what have other people done with ignition upgrades while still maintaining shift interrupt function?

thanks in advance:D

Re: omc 800 shift interrupt switch problems

easiest way is to buy the CDI brand ESA. It is around $75 last time I checked. I've never been a fan of a box of homemade doides and junk in a plastic box in the bilge area. Some people preach about SAE J1171 marine ignition and starters/alternators and then go and recommend soldering up some resistors and diodes from Radio Shack... but there is a drawing somewhere on the internet.

Find out what you have first.,

Look at the lower unit and check if it has a rectangular zinc anode above the prop behind the 6 idle relief holes.

thanks for responding Howard. i have the boat in storage but i got a picture i had and yes it does have the zinc in the location you had mentioned so it is infact a mech shift.

i will research both of your recomendation. do you by chance have a link to the drawing you were talking about?

thanks for the help so far. any help a guy can get with this older equipment is much appreciated!

Re: omc 800 shift interrupt switch problems

that ESA looks right, but those
are for Cobra shift linkage according to the googles...not sure if they are the same ones as 800 stringer
How have you determined the switches are faulty?

shop.evinrude.com says the switches for the add-on ESA kit for 79 were:
0982507 SWITCH ASSEMBLY,Shift overstroke
0982503 SWITCH ASSEMBLY,Ignition pulse

but they really don't fail that often in my experience. They are made by Cherry - somewhere years ago someone cross referenced them to Cherry part numbers but I don't have that link, nor the diode-fix one, but google omc diode fix and you should find that

Re: omc 800 shift interrupt switch problems

So I wanted to do an update. I ended up getting an updated cdi and a new set of micro switches. Got them all set up and the micro switches wernt working properly on the shift converter. So I wired in a foot peddle up at the controles. When I. Want to shift I pull a little presure on the controle bump the foot peddle and it come right out of gear... definitly not factory but very effective fix.....
