I am going to replace the seals in my upper and lower but ran into a problem removing the Ball Gearcase retainer. Two bolts snaped due to corrosion and I still cant get the retainer to come up. I have read both the Clymer and Seloc. All they say is to remove the (4) screws and then pry it out.

Is there anything the books dont mention??

Also can I replace the bolts with SS Bolt with anti seizing compound?

I think you will find the bolts are all Stainless Steel. I use Antiseiz on my bolts anytime I take then out.

Boatist, these bolts are some sort of aloy. They had corroded most of they way through, it only took about 10 ft lbs or less to snap them. I had my hand at the base of the retchet using one hand and was working them back and forth. The bolts snaped just under the head and I am thinking that the stubs still sticking up in the holes in the retainer is what is keeping it from coming up and off???

I could use a bigger hammer but that is a last resort.

The seal retainer has an O ring and usually coated with sealant so it takes a little effort to get them out even without breaking the bolts.

You can try a little heat, but be careful, you don't want to ruin the shims. If you have to pry a little, pry on the ball gear itself and not the edge of the retainer.

O man, sounds like you got a mess on your hands.

Thanks KaGee, Yes I do have a bit of a mess but at least I have a drill press so I can set it up and drill straight holes to either use an easy out or to just drill and chase the threads. This is not the first time for this drive, It was in salt for several years then fresh for about 15 years and has not needed much repair so it has been a long time since it was apart .

If I take it easy it should be. I just need to be careful and think befor i do.

Other wish I might have to think about a repower verses rebuilding for the long run.
