Hi, the gear shaft in the upper bearing housing is stripped, and I'm trying to replace it. It is a 1985 stringer 800. I got that damn nut off the top of the gear, but the gear will still not budge. In a diagram, it shows a centering cone on top of the gear. How do I get that off? I have hit it with a hammer, and tried a puller. I did not crank it too much, is there a trick, it says nothing about this in the book.

Also, I have already taken out the seals on the bottom of the shaft.

Thanks in advance for any help, I need to get this back together by the weekend.

That gear is a pressed fit. It also has locktite on it. It has to be pressed off. BUT you must support the bearing housing underneath!!! If you dont you will break the bearing housing. We used to use a housing from an elec. shift spring, but a pipe of similar size will work. Be careful and good luck. capt k

I broke the housing getting mine off- ... it's pressed tight ... and I banged with a hammer until something gave...cost me a lot of extra money, granted, but finding or making specialty tools was my biggest issue in my overhaul...still was cheaper than the local mechanics in the long run.
