On an OMC stringer drive, can I use a 22 hole boot for a ourdrive meant for a smaller 16-hole boot?

I am replacing my old 800-series stringer with an older model (235 stringer). The new drive looks like it would bolt on fine, but the boot sizes are different. My transom is set up for a 22-hole boot and the outdrive I'm putting in has a smaller 16-hole boot. Will the bigger 22-hole boot fit onto the smaller outdrive or will be asking for a leak due to overstretching?

With a crude string measurement it appears the outdrive I am putting in is a hare smaller than the original and the circumfrence around the clamp area is about 2 or 3 inches less.

One other concern is the new drive I'm putting on has a 235 stamped on it; aa round hole in the forward part of the drive and no through-hub exhaust; could this be a 400-series drive? The seriel number is not readable.

Here are some pics:
http://www.hyperfrogs.com/boat

By 'outdrive' I assume you mean the whole thing, leg and intermediate housing?

It sounds like you are trying to put on an electric shift out drive. If that is the case you'd be better off junking the boat than to go thru all that it takes to put that drive on. Another note, if the above is the case the drive shaft will not fit the original coupler bolted to the flywheel.

And no, the boots won't interchange.

Wow, never heard of someone swapping out for an older unit... most people want to get out of those old units in favor of a 800 hydro or mech shift unit.

I wouldn't do it. And Boomyal is correct... they will not fit. Besides the the old smaller boots are next to impossible to find.

hold the phone, the boot goes on the intermediate, not the outdrive- it makes NO DIFFERENCE what outdrive you use....all intermediates are the same size around where the boot clamps on...

Not positive hystat but I don't think so. Besides that hystat, rino never anwered my question regarding the changing of his intermediate housing. I assume he must be trying to do that and I don't think the later/larger boot will fit it.

The whole project is bred out of desperation and lack of understanding.
You also raise a good point about the o/d length. Bunches of them were the long shaft where all of the 800's were short shaft.
