OMC 6hp Noise on Throttle Down

I just bought a 1992 OMC J6RENM 6hp.

This is in a deep bucket with the prop off.

Every noise is sweet until I back the throttle off from medium high revs.

It makes three ugly sharp "knocks" every time. They are in the same time frame as a motorcycle "dum dum dum" as it would back off.

Is this normal or do I have rod bearing problems that do not manifest under load?

Thanks To All,

Robert

If you throttle down too fast they backfire just like a 2 stroke cycle especially with no load on them. Don't hit wide open under no load or you will have rod problems. Sticking out of the block.

This one is a 2 stroke.

Would this backfire sound like three hammer stikes?
If so, I'm greatly relieved.

Got the 2 stroke part.
Not like a loud rap but a popping yes. If it were on a boat i would say you are overunning the clutch hub.
