A local in my area is selling a mid 90's omc 5.8l 351 v8 engine and i want to purchase it for my boat. runs great low hours the guy damaged the hull beyond repair so he is selling what he can. i talked him down to $500 but he doesnt know if the fly wheel and rear housing is there.

A. is it worth getting if all i need is a flywheel and rear housing?
B. how much am i looking at if i need to get a new flywheel and rear housing?

I have a 21ft bayliner trophy with a 4cyl. volvo that peaks about 17mph, looking to get up to 25-30mph
the omc 5.8l 351 is out of a 4winns sundowner

Ayuh,... To do a swap, you'll need Everything, from the pulleys to the prop,...

An outdrive from an I4, won't run behind a V8...

I have a '92 20' Four Winns with the 5.8L attached to a Cobra drive. That is a great engine and will push my boat 45-50 with ease. If you are going to have to swap everything I imagine it will get pretty pricey but will certainly give you the performance you want.

Re: omc 5.8l 351 v8

motor has everything, im trying to figure out how to upload a pic, im not sure about that rear housing? but i have a volvo 270 outdrive currently. i bought a boat with the same outdrive last year as a spare. but it had a v8 hooked to it. so it has a different gear ratio than what i have. i have 5 props from a 14x17 14x15 15x15 15x17 and i believe the last is a 15x13. one of the guys we fish against has a 350 chevy hooked up to this same outdrive.

im sorry but i do not know what an i4 is Bond-o

thanks fellas

Re: omc 5.8l 351 v8

Just wanted to add to this, aiming at clarifying what the real issue is to the OP as I see it...

Going from a 4 cylinder to an 8 cylinder is problematic in and of itself, but the problems with the swap you describe go much deeper.

Your Bayliner is an older "white" Volvo Penta drive. The 5.8 engine and drive is a newer drive style and completely different, the 5.8 engine from that boat will not mate up to anything on your Volvo Penta boat. Thus, that engine is not all you will need for a successful swap from that boat into your boat. So, as Bond-O mentioned, you need the entire setup from the 5.8 boat, engine and outdrive and all steering and throttle controls. The hole in the transom is not correct for the 5.8 boats' drive, so this is a lot of work that most likely would end up as a large flower planter.

The 90's 5.8 OMC/Cobra is from a jont venture between Volvo and OMC at OMC was going belly up at that point in history, those became the Volvo SX drives eventually. The pre-SX drives from Volvo Penta (250/270/275/280/290/DPA...) do not share any components, and the transom hole is different as mentioned previously.

It is not so much a swap as a total re-fit.

Fortunate Son Fishing,

I did not realize when I posted earlier in this thread that this is the same boat you have been asking about for a year or so. Best advice is to not mess up the boat you have. Save your bucks and start looking for another boat then sell/trade/buy when you find the right one. I do understand what you are going thru and I feel your age has a lot to do with your wants, but I recommend against taking a good boat (one that other buyers would be interested in as is) and turning it into an unfinishable project destined for the "free boat with trailer" classifieds.

I have been thru that at your age, and have raised 2 sons thru and on past that age, so I have experienced it from all directions, and outcomes were not good sometimes. I do not have much advice about how to re-channel the "energy" but know it is almost always best to NOT start a project like that :)
