I have a 1994 Four winns 180 With a OMC 5.0 Carb. Ford motor. I am having a hard time, with the firing order on it. It has a decal with 1,3,7,2,6,5,4,8, but sure dosent look like what was it was. I took and replaced the cap and rotor, and went to hook up the wires and was confused. I hooked them up in that order and it dosent look the same as I took them off. Where is #1 at on the cap, and in which direction do you go?????? Thanks:confused::mad:

Take the #1 sparkplug out, bring the piston to top dead center compression stroke, you can verify compression stroke by putting you thumb in the plug hole and it should make compression as the piston comes up, if not it's on the exhaust stroke cycle and you'll have to go one more time around, now with the piston up the timing mark should be near TDC, turn the crank back or forth to get it dead on, now your rotor is pointing directly to where the #1 wire should go, then it's counterclockwise from there.

Ok I tried that as well. Its at the lower left. It just pops when I try to start it.

not sure what kind of distributor you are working with. but if your firing order does get set CORRECTLY your timing can still be off horribly. try twisting your distributor either way and try cranking a few times with it in different places to see if you get a better outcome

No sorry not going to mess with the distrubitor. The boat ran great befor. I just changed the cap and rotor, and got the plug wires crossed. I remember when I took them off most wires off the left side of the motor were on the left side of the cap and vice versa on the right side, there were not all crossed up.

Take the cap off, locate #1 cylinder on compression stroke, zero timing pointer, rotor is now pointing at #1 plug wire.install plug wires on order shown.
