I have 1989 Four Winns 200 Horizon with 5.0 OMC and Cobra drive in need of engine replacement. I have chance to acquire 1994 5.0 OMC rebuilt that is rigged for the Volvo Penta SX drive. Is this a feasable easy swap? What retros will be required? The Volvo Penta engine has a crank driven sea water pump. Can this be used on the Cobra?
Any thoughts, suggestions will be appreciated. I am new to this thread and a novice mechanic. Thanks..........

Howdy,

And Welcome aboard!

You can easily use the engine. Just think of it as a longblock. swap all the OMC "stuff" (engine mounts, flywheel housing, flywheel, starter carb, dist, alt, manifolds/risers, etc) over to the "Volvo" (GM) engine.

You will not use the engine mounted raw water pump. You already have one on the back of your Cobra.

If you're also replacing your cobra, you'll need to find a Volvo transom mount too......then you'll need more Volvo "stuff"

What exactly are you replacing?

Ahoy there!

I have that same engine and I'm looking for a boat. Mine was stolen before I had a chance to put the engine in. I would be willing to pay up to $4000.00 if the Four Winns is in good shape. I've seen a few out there but they are trashed, rotted and so on. I'm located in Northern Indiana. The other option is to sell you my OMC 5.0 Rebuilt that I got from Jasper Engines in Jasper, IN. My brother works there and got me a great price. If you're interested in the engine I would be willing to sell it for $975.00. It's ready to drop in. All you would have to do is hook up the wiring, throttle linkage and hoses. That way I can buy the boat I want with the insurance money and the $950.00. Let me know and thanks!

Thanks for your reply.........I am planning to replace the minimum that will get us back on the water...will I need to replace, starter, carb, dist, alt, manifold/risers? Are any of these Ok to leave on the "Volvo" engine. Note: the replacement "Volvo" engine is a FORD 5.0 not GM....Thanks again!!

Howdy and Welcome aboard..... You should really check out the following link Forum Rules

While personal messages offering stuff for sale or trade is ok, doing it in the open forum can get you banned.

Ok. It's a 302 FORD NOT a 305 GM!

If you;'re doing Ford--Ford, it's "do-able" but I am not sure you can use the Volvo manifolds and risers. They may not match up with the Cobra Y-pipe. If you have Thru-hull exhaust, it'll be easier to do.

You also need to ensure that you can either use the Volvo flywheel and coupler.

You may have to use your original flywheel and coupler to get it to fit in the OMC Cobra flywheel housing. You will have to see if it all fits.

If you have to use the original flywheel the newer starter may not fit.

I don't have any experience with the SBF so I don't know what they might have changed in 5 years or so. NO ONE uses Ford Marine engines anymore....

There may also be issues with the distributor/ESA but you should be able to use the original OMC dist.
