I'm reassembling my '85 OMC 400 drive and am trying to work out the shimming procedure. My drive just got new bearings and seals - all shafts and gears are being reused. I saved the old shims and am trying to get them back where they belong...BUT I'd still like to check the clearances to make sure nothing is too far out of spec. Has anyone done this without the "special" tools? If so, how and what were the clearances? If not, did you buy the tools or work with a local shop (or just assume the shimming was ok)? Thanks to any and all for thoughts and suggenstions.
