Ok well I just bought this 1989 Sunbird and was told Gimball bearing was bad , just removed out drive and verified bearing bad oil in bellows and bearing rough, I decided to go a little deeper and pulled top cover and found pinion gear in decent shape but drive gear /lower has some chips on the the upper end of the gear. I searched the parts houses and found NLA and want to know if anybody out there has a resource for the gearsets ? Thanks

Re: omc 4.3 upper gear set

3 of the assemblies in stock here:
OMC 0984013 -

if you just want the gears - any Evinrude dealer can get them -they're in stock in BRP's warehouse.
0984012 GEAR SET, 21:19, 4.3 L 1 $1,048.13 CAD

marineengine has them a couple hundred less than BRP shows - $13 more to buy OEM over Sierra - now that's a no-brainer..

0984012 0984012 - Gear And Pinion 21:19 OEM Part $801.82
1 in stock.
Upper Gear Set 18-1602
Replaces OEM # 0984012 Sierra Marine $787.73
2 in stock.

Depending on the chipping, I might just take a die grinder to the high spots and redo the preload/shimming.

Re: omc 4.3 upper gear set

Thanks for the help I was thinking the same thing about cleaning up the gear, only the lower gear has some chips in it anf they are only on a few teeth on the upper/smaller diameter portion. I will post some pics here soon. I am an ASE master tech and Nissan master tech but have know experience with OMC out drives so any help would greatly appreciated. 100_1864.jpg100_1868.jpg100_1869.jpg100_1870.jpg

Re: omc 4.3 upper gear set

can't see them that great, but it looks like those chips are out of the high load area. I can't see any contact stress fatigue or evidence of a hardening issue - kinda looks like a piec of bearing cage or something just went through them at some time. That small tapered roller is pretty frosty like the oil was contaminated at one time. I'd probably just save the money towards an SEI conversion to Mercruiser.
