Greetings - I am trying to remove the lower unit with the upper in place. The SELOC manual says to just lower the housing down and away until the shift rod disengages. I have been pulling hard on it to get it to release with no success. Is there anything else to it to get the shift rod to disengage? I don't want to force it and damage something else. Also, the manual calls for rotating the shift rod head to engage the pin when reinstalling - it sounds like they are assuming the upper is removed as well.

I had a new impeller completely disentegrate, and am getting no water flow with a new one, so I am taking it apart to clean it out and put new seals on the water tube.

Yea, to take them apart the drive has to be off the boat. and from the discription it must be a Cobra drive
But if you also look at your manual it shows the raw water pump is in the back of the upper housing, not between the upper and lower..... That's a Mercruiser Alpha drive and completely different company.

Thanks, but the manual definitely says it can be separated while still on the boat - but it sounds like it can only be reinstalled with the upper off the boat too - strange. It is a Cobra. Problem is I have chunks of a disintegrated impeller somewhere, and I want to clean it out. I also think the water tube seals may be shot - the new impeller is not drawing any water - I checked with the motor in a large water trough.

I also need to replace the exhaust bellows, so I may as well pull the upper off as well, but was hoping to make it easier to handle with the lower off already.

See your other post for my idea on getting drive off.Now on the water part. When you get the drive off you will be looking at a transum plate.Look to the lower left side of it,you will see a large black nylon nut on a nylon fitting, this is your ware inlet to the engine.Undo the hose that comes up to the thermostate hosing from the transum, get a garden hose and try forcing water back through it from engine side.If that is clear, take cover off of impeller hosing and impeller out, force water back through drive, where the nylon fitting went into drive, see if water and impeller pieces come out of impeller housing. This is how I got some pieces out.Make sure the little hose that is connected impeller housing is hooked up.Another place impeller piece usually get hung is in the power steering cooler. It is located inline with the hose that goes from transom to thermosated hoousing. It will be located on the back of engine, behind head, looks like a round cylinder with hydrolic lines on it.I would see no reason to seperate the top from the bottom on the drive unless you are very adventurous.I am no means a omc mech.just some one that has tore into mine a lot and learned alot from other people here on this forum.By the way when you pull that drive make sure you are in nutral.
