I don't see an actual weight for the drive unit in any manuals - how do most handle it? Two man wrestle job? I don't think I have room for a hoist arm under the swim step, and will probably have to lift the drive off unless I rig something up.

Re: OMC 4.3 Cobra sterndrive weight??

Robar
I pulled mine myself.Mine is a 1991 4.3 cobra.
The way I found to do it,at least this worked for me.I set a small piece, couple feet square of plywood under skegg.I lowered the drive tilt down till skegg made contact with plywoof.I raised or lower my bow jack to get the drive as vertical as I could.I undid the rams at drive end, don't let them just fall down so you don't damage the hydr. lines, tie or wire them.I undid the 6 nuts,3 each side, then I grabed hold of the big bolt that the rams attached to and rocked drive back and forth. If you must pry on it to get it loose be carefull not to damage surface.Once you get it to start coming out, rock it back,be sure to support the drive shaft as it comes out of bellows. Once I cleared the bellows with drive shaft I just picked it up by myself and carried to wooden stand I had made to set it up right on.I had to problem picking it up.Felt like it was about 100 pounds. Now I am not considered to be a hoss so take it for what is worth.

Re: OMC 4.3 Cobra sterndrive weight??

I can take my Bravo 3, with the props still on it, off by myself. I am 5'8" weigh 230 lbs, and am in the worst shape of my life. Even when I was 5'8" and 185lbs (3 years ago) I could do it. And I know a Cobra doesn't weight anywhere near a B3! Just take it slow. And if you have someone there to lend a hand the first time you do it, that's even better!

My cobra from my 351 5.8 was not that heavy. It took me and my friend to move it around since it was so low to the ground. It is not that heavy, just awkward to hold. You don't want to drop it on the ground, or better still, your foot.

You don't need a lift winch, the book says to do it that way, but they want you to be safe.

Like Tilliamwe says, just take it slow, you will get it.

Mike

Thanks - sounds managable for the two of us.
