The starter on our 78 seastar keeps sticking (keeps cranking)every time we try to start it, so we have to take a cable off the battery and, of course, it stops then we can connect the battery again and it isn't stuck any more. We've replace the starter solenoid, what else could be making it get stuck. We also put a different starter on but it may of been a faulty starter too.

Any Ideas?

first check the key switch,
then check the relay.
Don't change any parts without checking the circuit with a voltmeter.

I have the same problem but after disconnecting the battery and reconecting it, it will still crank if i replace they solenoid it fixes it but i have gone through 3 of them and still end up with the same problem. The marina couldnt figure it out and said i have no shorts. Did you figure anything out?

Sticking starter solenoid. On a Chebby, the solenoid engages the starter motor AND engages the starter drive. Time to remove the starter, CLEAN it internally, and rebuild it.
