OMC 3 Litre GM Breaks down under load, Backfires thru carb

We have an '85 Citation with an OMC 3 litre (GM) engine. It runs fine when it is idleing, but breaks down under load. It also is backfiring thru the carb. Any suggestions???

KELLY SOUNDS TO ME LIKE YOUR ENGINE DISTRUBTOR TIMMING IS A BIT LOW ALSO CHECK FOR MOISTURE UNDER THE DISTRUBTOR CAP.

Check for compression and good spark on all cylinders first first.You'll have point ignition on that engine unless it's been upgraded so point gap effects timing.If the points are at all suspect replace them (condencer as well )there cheap. If compression is good and you have good spark the last thing is fuel.Has the boat sat all winter ? did this start happening gradually or all of a sudden? Let us know.

We just bought the boat in May. It was backfiring abit then, but we figured it was because it had sat all winter with gas in the tank. We have had the boat out ofr probably about 10 hours since we bought it.<br />Thanks for your suggestions. I will print these for my husband.
