Hello, I have an Bayliner Cappri 78' with an OMC 3.0
Last weekend my starter failed, it wouls spin around but it did not game into the flywheel. It turned out to be a defective starter solenoid, so I bought a new starter from Sierra.
Now I have 2 problems.
First, one of the bolts to attache the starter motor to the block is broken off and stuck in the block, to remove it I will try to drill a hole into it and then I will try to unscrew it with a left turning (screw) tap.
Second problem is the new starter.
It looks exactly the same as the old one but the small gear of the starter points about 4mm more forward, so it must be closer to my flywheel.
I confronted my dealer with it, and he say's that he is selling one such a starter each week and never had any problem with it.
Still I am a bit afraid that the startergear will be to close to my flyweel (or even in it).
Question; can it destroy anything or was there just more tolerance in the old starter.

It's just a differance in specs. same starter, all Marine GM inlnes use the same starter

To Laddiesservice ; that is exactly what the dealer also told me, so do I understand it right that it will be within the tolerances and work ?

If your bolt (s) are bottomed out in the block you may have a witch of a time removing them, if they are not bottomed out try a small punch and hammer to back it out, or a small right angle drill with your left handed bit. I've got 2 friends with 4 cyl OMC's that's had broken starter bolts.....

Re: OMC 3.0 starter motor problem

The bolt's are indeed bottomed out in the block and we tried a small right angle drill wich broke.
The final solution ws to drill a hole from 9mm in the top of the block so in this way we could reach the broken bolt and drilled it out.
It was a hell of a job and the moment when the drill broke I lost all fait in a good ending, but at the end with a sunburn on our back's we succeeded.
We mounted th new starter and it worked.
This is already the second broken bold of the starter (first it was the long one and now the short one)
I mounted the extra attachment plate to fix the end of the starter to th block but still.
Any suggestions for a better solution?

thanks for all your reactions
