Hi all,
I am new to the forum but not to the boating world! Have an issue i need help with. I have a 1989 Bayling I/O 17ft. With the OMC (Ford) 2.3 and Cobra outdrive.

I have one little issue that I cant sem to pin down. After a 5 min warm up boat is still sometimes hard to start. Even after shutting off. Taking 5 min to get prepared to do some wakeboarding and starting up. She takes a few times to get her started. When i drop it in gear at low idle most of the time she will jerk and barly stay alive. If i do a quick fast idle before she seems to be ok most of the time. If i leave it jerking in idle she will clear up in about 15-30 seconds.

Also, Once im in idle and go to "punch it" to get the rider up she has about a 1-2 second bog or delay.

We can run the boat all day and only have these issues at there given time. Not a miss once were moving, cruising or wot.

Any ideas?

A few things I would check to start out.

Gas tank, fuel lines & pick-up tube.

Fuel filter/separator.

Clean the carb, adjust the mixture screws.

Timing and dwell.

Distributor, components and spark plugs.

On my boat it was a bad distributor cap, had similar problems but much worse than yours. Before I finally figured it out I did all this and now my boat starts up first try every time.

and check the yellow/clear hose between the carb and fuel pump for any fuel. Fuel in that hose indicates fuel pump diaphragm failure which can make the engine run very rich at idle.

Ayuh,... Testing is cheaper than throwin' parts at a problem....

There is a complete distributor tune-up kit made by Sierra, and NAPA has it the cheapest unless you order online.

It includes the cap, condensor, rotar and points. I started replacing them one-by-one but wish I had just bought it all at once because in the end I did anyway.

How do I test the hoses? Seems simple.. they leak or they dont.. Thats why i was throwing that out there to just replace them... i think that piece of hose is $4.30. Or im a missing something?

He's not saying it needs replaced or tested, he was just saying if there is fuel going through that overflow line then you have carb issues.

You can check ALL your fuel lines if you want just by removing them and shooting compressed air through them. I don't know if you still have the hard aluminum fuel lines but mine were just store-bought fuel line when I bought the boat and I wen't ahead and replaced them because I fixed a half-*** filter job that was in place. Fuel line at Advance/Autozone/Oreillys is only like 60 cents a foot.

Ok, Sorry I must have missed where he said check the fuel line..thats why i was like.. uhhhh what? LOL..

The tank over flow line? The one that vents out to the back of the boat?

I will def check this out..

Thanks Guys.. Seasons almost up here though ... 2-3 Weeks. Indiana Weather is setting in. SO I would rather not tear into it in the final few weeks.. I will and dont mind the simple fixed and I will check that tommorrow.

Thanks!
