I did some research and I can not find any info on how to adjust timing on OMC 2.3 motor. I read a few posts mentioning using a timing light which you have to connect to cylinder #1 wire and point it at timing marks. Just got my timing light, but I can not figure out where do I point it... I do not see any timing marks except for the scale on the timing cover. Please point me in the right direction here.... Thank you guys

Re: OMC 2.3 Timing Setup Question

There will be an indent on the harmonic balancer. This mark will line up with markings on the scale when the light flashes depending on the position of the distributed. When you rotate the distributor either way the indent will appear to move to reflect the timing. Be sure to set your base idle to reflect I believe they ask for 10deg after top dead center. Keep adjusting both until at idle with the boat in gear in the water so that your rpm is 650 and your timing is 10deg atdc. Make sence?

Look closely for marks on the damper. They are usually pretty fine and easily get lost in the muck and the rust. If you cannot find them you will have to manually find top dead center and go from there. I do not know what the setting should be for your engine but that should be easy enough to find. You just need to find all the reference marks.

Re: OMC 2.3 Timing Setup Question

ok got some time today to check timing, aligned camshaft to the proper mark (as per manual) bottom pulley marking which had to point to zero is pointing slightly off...

As per the manual I will have to readjust timing belt so the marks will align and then do the final adjustment of the ignition with the timing light. Manual calls for a special tool to relieve tension spring on the timing belt tensioner, do I really need that tool or is there a trick on how to do it without it?

I managed to get the tensioner to back off by carefully using a pry bar. Work slowly and it can be done. I have done it several times. Or in sure you can buy that tool.
