1979 omc (140) 400 series I/O motor starter motor removal. I am trying to remove the starter motor for repair. I can access the one bolt on the star board (open) side, plus the rear support bracket that attaches to the end cap thruogh bolt. The starter however is still solidly attached and won't pull back from the housing. I have the repair manual but it does not show the configuration of the attaching bolts. I cannot access the port side of the starter motor as it is up against the motor, and I can't get underneath the motor to see if there is any other bolt on the port side (short of lifting the entire motor from the boat). Can someone advise me of the attaching bolt configuration for the starter motor and how I can remove it? Any suggestions appreciated. nab1

Nab1, first welcome to iboats. There is another bolt on the port side of that starter. Sometimes you can get to it easily, others, you may as well pull the engine. It will be the same wrench size as the one you took off on the starboard side. Good luck, let us know how it goes.

I had a similar problem on my 800/350 Chevy. If you have a digital camera, take some pictures and check them out on your computer for a plan of attack.

Hi Nab1, I am encountering the exact sample problem as you described. There is little room for ratcheting and you can barely squeeze an impact wrench in.<br />Have you been able to resolve this issue? Please let me know if you have come across a resolution yet. Thanks-

if you can loosen bolt a turn to break loose, can try useing a 1/4 drive ratchet for a bit more clearance.

It also wouldn't be the first boat that had to have the engine pulled to change a starter.
