older nissan, air silencer lock plate

Putting a carburetor back together on a ns40c. I bought the old motor used and the carb had been monkeyed with before (boogered screw slots, etc.). The tabs on the air silencer lock plate (345-02417-1) were both bent at a 90 degree angle into the carb throat.

My parts list makes it look like the thing is all flat, the tabs on the same plane as the rest of it (which wouldn't allow the choke to work). Can somebody set me straight? AND, what purpose does the thing serve? Thanks, edmo

It should be flat. No, it does not interfere with the choke. You need it installed for proper airflow and mixture.

Thanks Paul, that was the diagram I was looking at that made me ask the question. I guess I'm doing something dumb again but if I install it with the choke open it won't close. Install it with butterfly closed, it can't open.

It installs inside the silencer, not behind it. You also need the rectangular plate.

Yep. That the way i have it per diagram. The plate and horn only add about 1/4" space. Not enough to provide clearance for opening and closing choke. Am taking to nissan dealer when i get to gulfport. Let you know what i'm doing dumb.

Finally emailed Nissan marine. Makes sense now. The thing is installed flat and after bolted in, the tabs are bent up and over the top of the bolt heads, so they can't come loose and be sucked in the carb throat.

Yep, I know a service manual would have probably told me that, but the price of a service manual would double the net worth of my Nissan marine holdings.
