I may be buying a '78 Grady White with a 250cui IL6 that HAD a MR1 outdrive. The boat does not have a drive at all. Will the newer Alpha One drive fit directly into the original transom mount? I have also heard problems with the shift mechanism on the older drives. Any information would be appreciated.......

Thanks

Alpha 1 will fit. But Alpha I Gen II will not. The "MR" drive was not made back in the 70's. The pre-alpha or "R" was made from 1966-1983.

Check this out maybe this will help you some??

"R" Drive

The Alpha1 is a direct bolt-up, Except, the input shaft Must be switched to the Shorter(8"+) Mod.1(R)shaft.... Other than that, It's a Drop-In.....
The Only Shift problems I know of are Worn,Sticky lower shift cables.. Easy Fix... Change the cable...
