Hello,
I have an early straight 6, 115 hp mercury that I'm having issues with. I am trying to get the lower prop apart but I'm not 100 % if i need to take the cotter pin out from the top of the shift linkage? Im hoping there is an easier way, as that cotter pin is not easy to get at. '

Also, my serial number is 3368200. Im not sure how to look up parts because most of the sites say my serial number is invalid. Anyone have an answer for that?

This boat and engine has been sitting for the past 3 years, im changing the water pump, gear oil, and plugs. Carbs need a rebuild as well but i need to clean out the fuel tank first... I have my work cut out for me, any suggestions would be appreciated.
thanks

Welcome V3ra. Your motor is a 1972 from this chart - http://www.maxrules.com/models/Merc_model_files/115-150.html

To remove the lower unit all you have to do is remove all the nuts and bolts above and below the anti-ventilation plate. There is a hidden bolt under the trim fin, so the fin has to be removed to get to it. Put the remote in forward before separating the lower from the midsection.

Ok i will try that tomorrow, i have all the bolts, nuts out but i could not seperate. I tapped lightly with a rubber mallet but had no luck. Does that shifter rod slide off freely?

So you have all 5 nuts and 1 bolt removed from the gearcase? If so, it should slide off. It is a tight fit, so it may take some persuading with some light tapping on some wood, to break it loose. The shiftshaft is a slip fit.

thank you Chris 1956 and GA_boater, I was able to finally take the lower prop out after about 10 minutes of pulling prying and tapping. I was able to get to the water pump and replace it... Does anyone have a recommendation of the best type of gear oil to put in the lower end?

I am just wondering if anyone has ever had to change the small screen fuel filters in the carbs. I'm just curious if this is something i might need to look into as I am bringing this gem back to life!

Thanks guys

Any marine gear oil for mechanical shift motors is fine. You will need 25oz. I buy two qts as it makes it easier to get the oil into the gearcase. Fill from the bottom and install the top plug when full. Then quickly install the bottom plug. New gaskets on plugs and tighten with an impact wrench.

The screens in the carbs are under the brass elbows? They usually do not get dirty, since there are filters upstream of them.
