Older Johnson Outboard 40hp

I have a older 1960's Johnson Outboard motor<br />40hp Model#RDS-26R. It's been sitting a while, but I recently got it running and shifting. Then I went out the other day and started it and the transmission will shift but it's stuck in forward gear. I checked out my manual but it wasn't much help. Any idea's or suggestions???<br />Thanks Edward

If your old 40hp Johnson is anything like my old 60hp you may have an electric shift. There is a solenoid in the lower unit that actually does the shifting. The default failure mode for this shifter is in forward for obvious reasons.
