old winch - new strap?

New boater. How do I modify an old boat winch to accept one of the straps instead of using a rope again? thanks for any info!

Howdy, Yaddah.<br /><br />I never had to modify a winch to switch it from cable to strap. I just took the cable off and attached the strap.<br /><br />Maybe your winch is different, but check it out.<br /><br />Good luck.

The winch has (2) 1/2" holes where the rope was threaded through a couple of times and the rope wasn't secured any other way. A bolt came with the strap but don't know where or how to attach it to the winch. There's the metal sleeve that runs through the middle of the winch but no way to attach the strap to it. don't know if i'm just "missing" the obvious way to attach the strap or what!

You SHOULD be able to put that bolt through the winch from one side to the other.

well, i do have to get a new winch because mine does not have a slot to insert the strap through to attach it to the center of the winch. talked to a business aquaintance who has a boat and he said that there was no way to attach the strap to the winch that i currently have (because it is too old). thanks anyhow

What slot to insert the strap through? There should be 2 holes, one on either side of the winch hub, on the side walls, of the winch. If not, is there any way, to drill a hole, in each side, as near as possible to the hub, to accomodate the bolt, that came with your winch strap?

I just bought a strap to replace my cable and it told me exactly what had to be done to convert from one to the other.<br /><br />Here's what the instructions say:<br /><br />"For winches not equipped with mounting slots, a 25/64" or 13/32" diameter round hole must be drilled in both reel sides as close as possible to the hub allowing only enough space for the thickness of the strap. Install bolt and tighten lock nut".
